Neural oscillation (brainwaves) – cycles of bioelectrical activity of the brain measured by electroencephalography. The characteristic frequencies of brain waves correspond to states of consciousness of man. Gamma waves accompany the action and motor functions but researchers discovered that they are also highly active i.e. in states of universal love and altruism. Beta brainwaves dominate our normal waking state of consciousness when attention is directed towards cognitive tasks and the outside world. Alpha brainwaves are dominant during quietly flowing thoughts, when we lie with closed eyes before going to sleep and in the morning when we wake up. Theta brainwaves occur most often in sleep but are also dominant in meditation. It acts as our gateway to learning and memory. In theta, our senses are withdrawn from the external world and focused on signals originating from within. It is that twilight state which we normally only experience fleetingly as we wake or drift off to sleep. In theta we are in a dream; vivid imagery, intuition and information beyond our normal conscious awareness.
Delta brainwaves are generated in deepest meditation and dreamless sleep. Delta waves suspend external awareness and are the source of empathy. They often occur in small children brain activity and in certain types of brain damage. Healing and regeneration are stimulated in this state, and that is why deep restorative sleep is so essential to the healing process. Studies have shown the reduction of secretion of cortisol (a hormone responsible for a stress and aging), and the increase of level of DHEA and melatonin.
The purpose of this video-sound installation is to introduce awareness of the recipient in the delta band, the experience similar to a deep meditation, when the one who is watching disappears – or at least introduction to the state of deep relaxation.
